We ordered it as a meal replacement for lunch, as my wife and I are busy educators who rarely have time for a complete meal during the meal. She didn't like the taste - which meant more for me! Mixes easy in shaker bottle, tastes great to me and fills me up perfectly until the evening meal. Couldn't be easier, and I know I am getting exactly what my body needs.
Vital House - Balance
I bought Vital House as an alternative to Soylent that was vegan and shipped to Canada.
Here's my first impression:
Pros: Taste is decent, lots of fiber, fills me up
Cons: Texture is bad, difficult to mix, bags are small
Overall I'm enjoying it but I wish they would work on the texture, it's very grainy and doesn't mix well. I'd also like it if they sold it in larger portions so that it didn't require as much packaging. However, I still like it and will probably get it again, and it really does make me feel full which Soylent never did.
Background: I've been using powdered meal as my primary food source for well over 2 years at this point and I've tried numerous brands, if it ships to Canada I've probably tried it.
Taste: My favourite so far is the vanilla. It's mildly sweet, not overwhelming like the earlier iterations of the powder so it's suitable for daily consumption. When you use meal replacement as your primary food source, a taste that's too strong will very easily burn out your taste-buds. Imagine eating chocolate every single day, very quickly chocolate would become your least favourite food. So a mild taste is just right when it comes to the vanilla flavour.
Digestibility: You would want to take it easy and drink it slowly with this one since it is quite viscous.
Mixability: It's pretty good. Quite similar to the earlier iterations of the meal replacement powders from now-defunct companies. Though it would be best if you mix it with a mixer and drink the meal right away. If you leave the drink overnight in the fridge, it essentially turns into a thick sludge that has the consistency of baby food.
Fulfillment was longer than I expected and took a couple days, even my original order.
Taste-wise, it's like a Vietnamese 3 color bean dessert. There's also a very distinct bean smell with the powder itself that may be a put-off if you're not used to the smell. It's probably best consumed after settling in the fridge for at least an hour, for it to thicken. My brother particularly likes the thickness and beany taste while I'm a bit more indifferent. I would actually prefer a finer powder, and therefore smoother consistency, like with Soylent v1.4 and above.
Being Canadian, it's nice that this is a Canadian company and one of the cheaper options available to us. Not to mention that it's vegan.
